Blog? Facebook?

That time has come. We have outgrown our blogspace here. While we will continue to maintain the blog through the Winter residency and into next semester, we will be making a move to a space that allows more members/authors in a semi-private setting. I am considering moving to Facebook, but I know that not everyone has a Facebook account. So let me simply ask--how would you feel about moving to Facebook, especially those of you who do not currently have Facebook accounts?

Then if I may paraphrase a famous Peter Benchley line, maybe it's time to get a bigger boat. Have you maybe thought of getting a website? I'm not a fan of Facebook, too much exposure and your privacy is shot. Call me a Luddite, but when the last person gets a Facebook account, it'll be me closing the door.

you realize you can change your privacy settings on FB, right Gwen? If the only person you want to share information with is me and that guy who played Cap'n Crunch in the ill-fated 1983 ABC sitcom, there's a setting for it.

What about those Geico cavemen?

ummm, I've had bad experiences with facebook, but I guess people are more likely to check it out regularly...

Well. I don't have a facebook account, but it would give me an excuse to actually get one. Then I could be really super cool and "the shit." I would have to figure out how to set the privacy thingies and the other setting-ma-jiggers. I don't want my students stumbling across anything I might say on here.

Lizzy, you have heard that meeting guys on the internet is a bad idea, right? I tried that and I got stuck with a wife!

And I've also heard if you want to REALLY maintain your privacy, Dave, you don't get a Facebook account at all! I have barely enough time to keep up with my two blogs, five email accounts, three email loops, a job, a husband, a life and oh yeah! somewhere in there I get time to write!

BTW, you're a funny guy, Frisk. Not as funny as Dave, but funny nonetheless.

Thanks Gwen. We forget that you're used to the kind of privacy on your blogs where you have to enter a credit card for "age verification." =)

Er, no, Frisky. My blog is surprisingly tame. Unless Liberal Politics gets you all fired up.

The one issue with Facebook is that it is a tiny bit difficult to have a public forum there—that is, one people not already in the group can see.

Uh oh, Gwen--are you one of those dangerous anti-American socialists that are actually secret French under-cover agents looking to destroy our way of life as we know it with your "fairness" and "equality?" You know, the ones that don't want poor people without health insurance to just die and stop sucking up all our tax dollars that could be better spent on cooler bombs or to provide larger annual bonuses to down-on-their-luck CEOs? We'll have to keep an eye on you...

Ohhhh, Frisky, don't get me started. I'm so East Coast Elite I regularly eat arugula and read the New Yorker - right out in public! And I didn't even get upset when my company didn't give me a raise this year. I figured they were probably donating it to Wall Street and they need it more than I do. I was only going to use the money to cover the raise in my health insurance anyway.

Dearest Frisk, I don't meet men on the internet, are you crazy?! I did that when I was 21-- went on 7 dates in 5 days and was EXHAUSTED. Never. Again. ;-) I'm more concerned with spies and hackers hahahahaha

As long as it's not Twitter I'm happy.

Gwen--Do you sip latte while doing all that?

Lizzy--What did you expect when you post a picture like THAT online!

Gwen Jones said...

Mocha latte grande DECAF!

Even your beverages are un-American! I all seriousness, though, I'm waiting for that liberal take-over we were promised. Finally, we have a majority in everything, EVERYTHING, and we can't get socialized medicine? What the hell!

I'm new to the program, even this Blog space, but I agree with the general tenor of what's been posted here...

- not crazy about Facebook

I'm not that design savvy, but a website with a Discussion Group space, including current and archived topics seems like it would serve the intents well.

Need to get the claws out, Frisk. No more mister nice guys. Bipartisanship? PAH! My way or the highway, buddy. Beat them at their own game. Liberal with a Capital L!

Er...what were we talking about anyway? Ah, right. I hate Facebook!

Brian,

Go Daddy has a service that combines a website, blog, photos and a whole bunch of other services together. It has chat enabling and a few other gadgets. I'll look into it if you're interested. It costs, but not too much, between $5 and $12 a month.

Thanks, Mark, but we're going to go with something that costs more in the neighborhood of "free." Well, exactly free, actually. But that does spark the idea to see if University Computing can set up something like that for us--so thanks.

I have used wordpress.com for a blog for my students, but I have no idea if it would have more space or less space or more users or less than this current one. I really don't know anything about much--that's the irony in my genius. Or the genius in my irony.

Hi Brian, I don't know much about it but you can look into creating a google group: http://groups.google.com/?pli=1. Looks like an unlimited member limit and you have the choice of creating a public or private group.

Facebook would certainly work to keep us in the loop since those of us who use it are conditioned to checking it daily, but I can see why the MFA program might want its own forum - one where social lives don't collide with professional/educational lives. Not that that isn't happening already....

If I paid for it for like three years upfront, could that count as my enrichment project? Heh heh heh!

Hi Brian - I would love to better understand what you're looking for in a site. It's easy to poll people on social media preferences, but most choose based on personal needs (a la FB.) There's pros and cons to all of them, but when you're looking at it as a "business" tool in your communications strategy, which in essence you're doing here, there are a few considerations. If you want to grab lunch or a cup of coffee one day this week,I'd be happy to hear what you're hoping to achieve and offer some thoughts since this is an area I work with clients on. Just email me at the wcsu address if you're interested.
