Should you self-publish? One author's thoughtful analysis.
I thought some of you might be interested in this comprehensive essay by Edan Lepucki called "Reasons Not to Self-Publish in 2011-2012: A List."

The subject of self-publishing has crossed my mind a lot lately, I see discussion after discussion in the social media world about it and I have several self-published authors on Twitter following me. I see the appeal, it's a quick way to "publish," yet, as this essay points out, it may only lead to a handful of people to fall in love with your work, not the masses that a publishing house can deliver.
I know of one author, who goes by the pseudonym David Wong, who released a self-published horror/dark comedy novel in 2007 on the web. It was downloaded 1,000 times leading to a surprising pick-up with a publishing house and a feature film deal. He is now working on the sequel to that book, and the movie, John Dies at the End, is slated to release in 2012. Sometimes, the risks can be worth it.
